Kenya will not negotiate with al-Shabaab for the release of two kidnapped public officials, Colonel Cyrus Oguna of the Kenya Defence Forces said on Saturday (February 25th), Kenya's Capital News FM reported.

Oguna's comments followed a video posted Friday by al-Shabaab that showed Kenyan district officer Yesse Mule Edward, who was kidnapped last month alongside immigration ministry employee Fredrick Irungu Wainaina, asking Kenya to abandon its military operations in Somalia to secure his release.

"Our position as KDF has never changed," Oguna said, speaking at police headquarters in Nairobi. "We will not negotiate with a criminal organisation." Oguna dismissed the video as "propaganda" and said Edward was "forced to say something he would not be willing to say".

Oguna also confirmed that Kenya will officially join the African Mission in Somalia after the United Nations Security Council approval last Wednesday.
