The Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) is handling up to 40% of container cargo in Dar es Salaam while Tanzania International Container Services (TICTS) performs repairs to improve efficiency, Tanzania's Daily News reported on Thursday (February 23rd).

"TICTS is repairing its ship-to-shore gantry crane. [As] there is construction work going on, TPA has stepped in to fill in the gap," said Emmanuel Mallya, head of the Tanzania Shipping Agents Association.

Last week, the Surface and Maritime Transport Authority (SUMATRA) gave TICS and clearing and forwarding agents three months to improve efficiency to avoid cargo delays. If improvements are insufficient, shipping lines will be allowed to charge as much as $250 for a vehicle delay surcharge.

"Any stakeholder who delays cargo clearance will be held responsible," said SUMATRA Public Affairs Manager David Mziray in a letter, warning that they may be held responsible for paying levied surcharges.
