At least 30 Kenyan civilians have been killed by al-Shabaab and its sympathisers in Kenya since October, police spokesman Eric Kiraithe announced on Saturday (February 18th).
Kiraithe said the attacks were carried out in towns near the Somali-Kenyan border.
In addition, two Kenyan government officials and a number of civilians have been kidnapped by al-Shabaab since the beginning of the incursion into Somalia, according to military spokesman Cyrus Oguna.
He said that the military knows the exact location of those who were kidnapped, but must review the situation with the help of local religious leaders before going in.
"Efforts have been initiated by the government to ensure that there are discussions going on and that those who have been abducted are released and brought back home safely. But we are not discussing with the al-Shabaab because they are a criminal gang," Oguna said, according to AFP.
