The al-Qaeda-allied al-Shabaab vowed Saturday (February 18th) to step up suicide attacks in Mogadishu, one day after a car bomb attack on a police station wounded two people in the city, AFP reported.
"The explosion which hit at the police headquarters on Friday was the beginning of a series of suicide and bombing attacks that mujahedeen fighters plan to carry out in Mogadishu in the coming days," al-Shabaab military spokesman Sheikh Abdulaziz Abu Musab told reporters.
Two people were wounded in the Friday blast, when explosives in a car seized by the police were detonated, destroying part of the police compound's perimeter wall, police said.
Police official Mohamed Abdi said security has been tightened in the city.
"Police are on high alert to stop any attempt by al-Qaeda to harm civilians. ... We have intelligence the enemy is planning to carry out desperate attacks in Mogadishu," Abdi told AFP.
Last week, a suicide bomber killed at least 15 people at a cafe near the presidential palace, the deadliest blast in Mogadishu since October, when a truck packed with explosives killed at least 82 people.

Somaliland is after the opportunity she lost 54 years ago but we are urging her to forgo her dreams of getting back that opportunity
The London conference is just a show off to the Somali and it can be good if the Somali people sit together and plan how to bring peace and not fight each other.
I greet you all _ Abdinoor Mahamed Wiriye Widhwidh who is now referred to as God, rest his soul in peace. We pray for him and mourn his death together with the former president COL Abdullahi Yuusuf who we pray for him to be in paradise. We also pray for peace and patience for all the people of Somalia who lost them.
I would like to say Al Shabaab, stop the war and show kindness to your people.
intersting alshabab al qacida
I love my motherland.
I would like to ask my brothers Al-Shabaab whether the faith they normally talk about is teaching the Somali children how to become suicide bombers. Fear your God.
I don't know what to say! What is this stupidity, retardation and terrorism committed by the terrorist groups of al-Shabab?! Is it reasonable that a Muslim person kills people and bombs cities? Where are their minds? What kind of stupidity is that?!
let all the people of good will world over, put their efforts together to bring the war in SOMALIA to a total end this year. Douglas.
If you ask for my opinion with regards to the,"London conference", I can say, it is not to help the Somalia, it would have been good for them to hold the conference in their homeland because the Somalis say, a man who is far from you cannot do a lot for you to solve your problems.
