Paddy Ankunda, commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in Mogadishu, called on East African nations to collaborate with the African Union in its efforts to eradicate al-Shabaab, Somalia's Shabelle Media Network reported on Sunday (February 12th).

The request for regional co-operation came two days after al-Qaeda's formal induction of al-Shabaab on Thursday, which Ankunda dismissed as nothing new. He said that the two terrorist organisations were already working together, but only recently announced it openly. \

The affiliation announcement is a sign that the ongoing military efforts against al-Shabaab are weakening them financially, he said.

You are not dealing with a conventional military force here; you're dealing with an insurgency and you absolutely need the assistance of the locals, to provide information about exactly who is al-Shabab and who is not. So you can send in forces as you wish, but you need to have a situation where people say, "We are sick and tired of this, and we have to find a peaceful solution." You're not going to find peace through the use of military force.
