Thirteen al-Shabaab fighters were killed and others seriously injured during a raid by Kenyan and Somali security forces in south Somalia's Dalayat, Kenyan military spokesperson Maj. Emmanuel Chirchir announced on Wednesday (February 8th).
The joint operation between Somali Transitional Federal Government soldiers and the Kenya Defence Forces may have killed one of al-Shabaab's top commanders, Chirchir said. "Abu Yahya, an al-Shabaab field commander in the southern sector, is suspected to [have] been gunned down during the ambush," he said on Twitter, adding that one Kenyan soldier was injured.
Dalayat is an al-Shabaab stronghold that serves as a command centre for the group, Chirchir said.
