More than 550 families, victims of last month's floods in Dar es Salaam, have begun moving to temporary shelters provided by the Tanzania Red Cross Society and the government, Tanzania's The Citizen reported on Monday (January 23rd).

President Jakaya Kikwete has instructed the government to allocate plots of land to accommodate flood victims, said Red Cross spokesperson Raymond Kanyambo.

The organisation has been working with officials to co-ordinate the provision of clean water and sanitation facilities. So far, it has built 300 transitory shelters to host more than 2,000 flood victims.

"We will continue helping these people until we are satisfied that they have adjusted satisfactorily to the new settlement," Kanyambo said.
