Two Kenyan doctors accused of having ties to al-Shabaab opposed the prosecution's motion to drop terrorism related charges against them on Tuesday (January 17th).
Doctors Ali Omar Salim and Adan Hassan Hillow were arrested on October 20th and prosecuted the following day for allegedly supporting al-Shabaab and engaging in criminal activity in their clinic.
The defendants told the court they want their case to be tried, and vindicated if the charges are not proved. "We want our names to be cleared by this court, not through a short-cut," the suspects told chief magistrate Esther Maina.
Defence lawyers have asked the magistrate to reject's the state application to drop the charges on the grounds it does not guarantee the defendants will not be charged later. However, prosecutor Onesmus Towett told the court the doctors would not be arrested again.
Maina is considering the arguments and is set to deliver a final decision on February 2nd, Kenya’s Daily Nation reported.
