The Somali army, backed by African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) forces, is poised to take control of towns and rural villages in Lower Juba as it marches towards the strategic city and al-Shabaab-stronghold of Kismayo.

Major General Abdikarim Yusuf Dhegobadan said he expects his forces to purge Kismayo, Somalia's third-largest city located 500 kilometres south of Mogadishu, of al-Shabaab by August.

Dhegobadan told Sabahi that the terrorists are fleeing their hideouts as Somali forces advance.

He called on residents to evacuate areas under al-Shabaab control and move away from locations that contain weapons caches.

"Kismayo is a symbol for the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), which is why it is trying to take over the city," he said.

According to parliamentarian Mohamed Omar Gedi, al-Shabaab's extremism and crimes against humanity, which have included assassinations of Muslim scholars, intellectuals and whoever opposes their deviant beliefs, have gone too far.

Gedi said the Somali army will soon crush the terrorists and that al-Qaeda-allied al-Shabaab is on its deathbed.

"Our troops have made progress in the latest confrontations and senior leaders of the radical group and their militias have been stricken with fear," he told Sabahi. "We will take control of Kismayo as new fighting breaks out and the raging fires engulf [the enemy]. We will be victorious and will prevail."

Somali military officials said the army's operations will likely expand towards Lower Juba after the TFG mobilises its military towards Marka, the capital of Lower Shabelle and Jowhar, the capital of Middle Shabelle.

Deputy Minister of Air, Sea, and Land Transportation and Ports Abdirahman Kulmiye Hirsi said the government's capture of Kismayo, al-Shabaab's largest remaining stronghold, will be a fatal blow to the group.

"Our forces will intensify security and attack campaigns targeting the bases of these groups in several locations in the regions of Gedo, Lower Shabelle, Middle Shabelle and Lower Juba to secure ports and roads and allow the delivery of aid and medical assistance to people affected by diarrhoea and cholera, which have lately become epidemics," he told Sabahi.

Former AMISOM spokesman Major Paddy Ankunda revealed a comprehensive plan to take over Kismayo so that aid can be distributed and residents can lead a normal life.

Ankunda told reporters in Mogadishu that people will soon hear good news about Kismayo.

Al-Shabaab harasses Kismayo residents

Kismayo residents say they suffer from financial hardship, water scarcity, electricity outages, and food and medicine shortages due to al-Shabaab's grip on the city, and live in constant fear that the group will carry out retaliatory attacks as Somali and AMISOM forces approach.

Anab Mohamed Musa, 36, said she fled Kismayo five months ago after al-Shabaab forbade her from selling qat, which is legal in Somalia, to support her three children.

"Most doctors, relief workers, journalists and even students that studied English in the city who were accused of spying for Western intelligence agencies had to flee," she told Sabahi. "The rebel group monitored cell phone calls through local telecommunications companies so they could listen in on conversations and carry out assassinations and thwart plots hatched against the group."

Kismayo resident Abbas Mohamed told Sabahi that al-Shabaab fighters stopped a number of elderly citizens from travelling to Mogadishu to receive essential medical care as part of the group's efforts to prevent residents from fleeing to areas under TFG control.

He said al-Shabaab also harasses women, imposes strict dress codes and bans them from working.

Mohamed said al-Shabaab forced most of Kismayo's men to bear arms and train for guerrilla warfare, and imposed their style of dress so there would be no discernible difference between civilians and militants.

Al-Shabaab has also recruited women and girls to carry out attacks, he said, and during the past three years, they have given away prizes in the form of Kalashnikov rifles and hand grenades to children who memorised the Qur'an.

Mohamed said the people have a hatred of al-Shabaab's behaviour and aggression.

"The militants of the group allied with al-Qaeda planned for and executed horrendous acts that have disgraced humanity, such as stoning to death a girl for adultery who was not yet a teenager," he said. "This was committed without a full investigation of the charge [brought against her] and without full medical tests to determine her sanity and physical wellbeing."

It’s now evident that the Al shabab have been defeated and this has been the effort of the Somali people together with the forces. Since the defeating life is slowing going back to normal and people are now concentrating on rebuilding their country. The government is also improving on security.

Al-shabab is known all over the world as the most notorious group in Eastern Africa and the whole of Africa at large. This terror group has caused unspeakable acts of terror and human rights violation. Those who didn’t agree with them were punished severely either by death or amputation of body parts. The terror group has been responsible for bombings and suicide killings in Somalia and neighboring countries. Young children were abducted tortured and turned into soldier without any form of training; this led to many of them getting killed in the battle with the government forces. The Al shabab has also been responsible for the piracy at high sea and affecting international trade with the Eastern African countries and tourism. Many people in Somalia have suffered greatly and have not known peace for a very long time; they have been turned into refugees having to endure hunger and diseases.

If sustained pressure is mounted on this rag tag, hit and run militia group, victory will certainly be achieved by the KDF and its allies and consequently the complete liberation of Somalia. Human beings in Somalia deserve the right to be free as any other people anywhere else in the world. That important fact the KDF and rest must always keep in mind to give them the motivation of freeing the oppressed. Otherwise we wish our soldiers every best.

We must spread awareness of the correct thoughts and ideas of religion through quality education and a conscious media, and by eradicating poverty, which is the main reason that leads people to adopt the extremist ideologies. These poor people feel oppressed and frustrated. We must solve the problem of unemployment, which leads the youth to feel empty, which helps to provide an environment that convinces the youth of the militant ideas. This is also where the role of the religious institutions comes in. They help in the dissemination of moderate thinking; they educate the youth about the seriousness of engaging in these extremist thoughts; they spread the culture of diversity and the exchange of views with freedom of expression and access to public freedom; and they establish the democratic life in society, allowing more freedoms that spread more tolerant thoughts and helping people to be more open to others.

Indeed it is painful to see a group of people keeping people on bondage for selfish reasons that don't make sense in the name of Alah. God himself is love, they have oppressed the people of Somali for decades,"no sense could prevail to them that that is being evil",now that the oppressed are being relieved they feel that is wrong and want to continue killing innocent people.Let us pray for the liberators and pray for the people of Somali.May peace be prevail in Africa and may God bless Africa

Somalis do not make the mistake again after saving your country from the terrorist's propaganda under the shadow of religion. Remember it is not the first time your country has been saved from the hands of the terrorists and then you handed it over to the same terrorists. Ethiopians helped you in removing the terrorists then you were told that they are the non-believers and that they do not have the reputation to help you bring stability in your country and you waged 'jihad' and returned the country in the hands of the terrorists once again. Remember religion benefits a person as an individual to go to heaven and never should it be mixed with politics. In this world what is needed is reason and logic. If you bear that in mind, for sure Somalia which had a lot of respect will come back.

MY TANZANIAN FRIENDS GREED AND SELFISHNESS OF OUR LEADERS OF ALL CADRES OF THE PUBLIC AND THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT IS AS AA RESULT OF AN INDIVIDUAL AND NOT THE PARTY. A PARTY THAT LOOKS AT TRIBE AND RELIGION, THESE THINGS ARE NOT BENEFICIAL AT ALL IT IS BETTER WE REMAIN EXACTLY LIKE WE WERE LEFT WITH MWALIMU NYERERE INSTEAD OF GIVING A PARTY THAT LOOKS AT TRIBE AND RELIGION TO TAKE POWER. OUR COUNTRY IF YOU LOOK AT THE SYSTEM THAT WAS LEFT BY MWALIMU,HIGH LEVEL LEADERS ARE FROM THE REGULAR COMMUNITIES AS REGARDS TO WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE PARTY THAT IS SURGING THAT IS CHADEMA. THIS PARTY IS BASED ON TRIBALISM AND RELIGION AND IF YOU LOOK AT THE SOURCE OF CHADEMA THIS PARTY CAME FROM THE BIRTHPLACE OF THE LIKES OF MANGI SINA. IT IS BETTER FOR FEW LEADERS TO ACCUMULATE WEALTH AND ACTIONS TAKEN INSTEAD OF UPROOTING A TREE THAT GREW IN THE DESERT WHEN WE GREW IT IN HARDSHIP I DONT HAVE A PARTY ONLY THAT THAT IS MY OPINION. However i am real paterbed by media station who keep on airing the AMISOM and KDF' plans as well as the advances that will be made. Yes! they are keeping us updated but they should be made to be aware that this information is used by the Al-shabaab to startegise themselves or complicate their game plans too. Please! please! please! mr. (all your titles taken into considerations) spokesman regulate the information given to the media people weather national, regional or internatinal. If possible give news after the attack has been made. Whoever who wants to see what is happening or what you are doing, let them be patient. In any case, where have they been when these al-shabaab guys were butchering people. Civil societies should also reserve their meaningless comments. Let them assist where possible but not condem the good work of AMISON and KDF. Otherwise, KDF and AMISOM, thanks for the good work, carry on men and women. My the Almighty be with you in all aspects.

KDF, TFG and AMISOM, forces you are in a better position to take Kisimayo overnight and I think it is long overdue. If I may ask, Why do you let the leaders of the Al Shaab to escape from Kisimayo? Secondly, are you still convinced that the leaders of this group are not living in Kenya and make busines with some of our leaders? Why should we (ordinary citizens) continue suffering in the hands of the Al Shaab when "our leaders" enjoy the piracy monies. To deal Al Shaab a lasting blow, the war should have began with Eastleigh -Nairobi before it was taken to Somalia.

am happy with the way KDF took time to strike against Al shabaab in kismayo, because the militant have hold civilians for there safety as their shield. They wanted to cover themselves to U.N human right, that KDF they have killed cilivian, but now they will not blame KDF,they will blame AMSIMO and are protected with UN.The kenya defense force are well trained and they will deal al shabaab ruthless.they will regret to attack kenya. The kenya military intelligence is perfect, currently al shabaab are quite because they do not know Kenyan's plan.

Al-Shabaab has massacred the Somali people and what is happening cannot be done by a Somali person, but is rather the result of inhumane ideologies disguised under a religious tag. The Somali people will become stable and rest one day, regardless of the problems they are undergoing such as killings, robbery and lootings of their properties done by these groups. The government forces should not attack areas inhabited mostly by civilians as this will lead to the death of more people if this happens. The government should be aware of the welfare of its citizens.

I'm proud of what is goingon so far in somalia, what is needed now is proper planning and tactical approach proccedures, its only a matter of time kismayo will be under the military control zone, yes casualties gonna be there, most important thing is to sweep the entire city and make citizens to enjoy than all the time they are being hostaged by the so call Al Shabaab, take time but you must win the war backward never forward for the win.HONGERA we are watching you and praying for you and somalia one day will enjoy PEACE Former Peacekeeper in East Timor Rtd C.I. This is a story by people under intoxication. This man being fought in Qoqani and Kolbiyo and deceiving the public should do what he can . . .  Putting the country under the rule of the hooded men is better than putting it under African colonial rule.

As much as I'm pleased with the good news of the planed advance by the TFG to capture Kismayo, and unless there's good reason not to mention who is involved in the advance, I think it's wrong not mention the KDF who have been give the mandate to take Kismayo due to the fact that they have firepower to drive Al-Shabaab out of Kismayo and set free the Somali people.
