Abdi Hussein Abdi, a 23-year-old former al-Shabaab recruit, sat on a mat drinking tea with a group of young men at the home of a friend. The room was filled with raucous conversation, but Abdi was quiet and occasionally smiled at jokes.
Abdi told Sabahi that he had just returned from Somalia where he had been fighting alongside al-Shabaab since August 2010. He said he was recruited by Muse Hussein Abdi, also known as Deere, with the promise of money.
Deere was an al-Shabaab recruiter originally from Wajir District. He was killed at a checkpoint in Somalia in June 2011 alongside Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, the mastermind of the 1998 US embassy bombings in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam.
Abdi said the al-Qaeda-allied group he went to support had been outgunned and outmanoeuvred, and had lost favour among Somalis for its unnecessary restrictions and indiscriminate killings of civilians.
In his last al-Shabaab mission, Abdi said he battled Kenya Defence Forces in Afmadow, where they now operate under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
"It was the biggest challenge we had encountered since last October. We were trudging across harsh landscape with little or no food and no pay and facing the prospect of shelling from the air and on the ground," he said.
The defeat forced him and about 10 other youths to sneak back into Kenya, posing as refugees fleeing war in Somalia, he said.
"When I joined al-Shabaab, we did not prepare for a large-scale offensive from outside forces. We were to fight Somali and Ethiopian forces. But when you are under attack from all fronts, and you are only equipped with Kalashnikovs and rocket propelled missiles, you feel the heat," he said.
He said the once formidable al-Shabaab movement had become disjointed with commanders and foreign fighters fleeing.
Although Abdi said he has quit the militant group, he occasionally runs into recruiters asking him to return to the warfront.
"I want to settle down, start a family and be a law abiding citizen. I joined al-Shabaab as a job, but for the last six months we had not been paid," he said.
One of his friends, Jamaa Abdullahi Hassan, said Abdi and a group of friends disappeared unannounced one day. Hassan became suspicious when he had not heard from them for several months.
"We detest the indiscriminate killings of al-Shabaab," Hassan said. "Now that my friends are back, we hope they are changed and ready to integrate with the community."
Hassan said he and his friends will support Abdi now that he has come home. They are planning to help him start a new business and turn a new page in his life.
Many youths are reappearing in villages and towns across Kenya's North Eastern Province after a long absence, a number of residents, government officials and security analysts told Sabahi. The youths are thought to be sneaking back into the country after fleeing the allied forces offensive against al-Shabaab in Somalia.
Authorities do not have an exact figure but North Eastern Province Police Chief Leo Nyongesa told Sabahi that hundreds enlisted with al-Shabaab since 2006, and they now seem to be trickling back home.
"Their return is good because they are abandoning the terror group," Nyongesa said. "At the same time, it is concerning because we do not yet know what they will change into. Security is on high alert and will move to make arrests if we establish they have ill motives."
Many youths are not coming out publicly to claim they were part of al-Shabaab out of fear, but Nyongesa said authorities would like defectors to come out, seek amnesty and collaborate with the police to provide crucial information on the group's operations.
Security analysts say the Kenyan recruits are leaving because of the increasing pressure al-Shabaab has faced from Somali and African Union forces, which has left the group scattered and beleaguered by internal conflicts.
Retired Major Bashir Hajji Abdullahi said the youths' return is an indication that al-Shabaab is on its deathbed after losing many of its strongholds.
He cautioned, however, that while the returning youths do not pose an immediate security threat, the government ought to address the issues that led them to join al-Shabaab in the first place.
The youths from the region who joined al-Shabaab did so purely for money, not because of its misplaced ideologies, he said. Abdullahi said that although the young recruits are coming back unarmed, they have been trained for combat, something that poses a potential threat.
"It is a rare opportunity," he said. "Instead of alienating them, which could force them to join other extremist groups, the government should keep the youths busy by creating job opportunities or empowering them to be self-reliant."
David Ochami, a journalist based in Mombasa who monitors militant groups in the Middle East and Horn of Africa, said the youths who are returning have learnt that war is not easy.
"The Somali and African Union forces have not only dismantled al-Shabaab but also its ideology," he told Sabahi. "The idea of jihad has been destroyed. There will be no morale for the youths to join a vanquished force."
Ochami said that prospective recruits will be further discouraged to join al-Shabaab once the group is chased out of its remaining strongholds, particularly Kismayo.

Al-shaabab yes is for now scattered but there is nothing bitter than trying to insert insecurity for fame.no one knows the secret of life until faced with the power of death.let it be known even though religion tries to dominate life no one has ever seen GOD we purport to say we support with our different faiths .life is GOD and GOD is life we ought to fear GOD and LIFE which we do not know its start and end.
When the doors of hell opens there is fire to consume whatever is around.al shaabab youths from kenya are not welcome.
good work from our troops but what about our prodigal sons will the government create job opportunities for the kenyan youths without tribolism to avoid this in the coming faeuture
You children, this comment is a lie.
When the non-Muslims are fighting the holy war fighters they say they are fighting Muslim extremists. A question that needs asking is what is extremism? Don’t struggle to look for the answer from elsewhere. Extremists are those Muslims who hate non-Muslims. Likewise, the polytheists and the defectors from Islam always claim the non-Muslims and Muslims to be brothers who can co-exist. Oh God! Is it God who say the truth or the non-Muslims? God says in a verse of the Koran (Neither the Jews nor the Christians will ever be satisfied with you until you follow their sect). Oh God! your rights are one way and attaining them is difficult. Oh! God, we are fighting in your favor for we want you to reward us with your paradise, we therefore beg you to accept us as sincere martyrs. We are neither fighting for Al-Shabaab to succeed nor do we want the implementation of Mahiga’s constitution in Somalia. We are fighting for your sake. Oh God! Grant us martyrdom and reward us with your Paradise (Janatul- Firdowsa).
I think the highest point is 99 which is here.
I would like to thank the workers of Hadhwanaagnews staff for the good way they serve their people and their country; both Somaliland and the rest of Somalia. Peace and blessings of God be upon you Amina Said from LONDON UK. First, I would like to pass my regards to all the workers of Hadhwanaagnews International staff and thank them for the good way they serve their people and their country; both Somaliland and the rest of Somalia. After greetings, I would like to contribute my opinion on the debate by the man called Dirirdhabe and participated by other men. Even though my response comes late, I would like to express my opinion based on the truth as a woman, , without taking any side or supporting anyone, and striving to acknowledge the truth. After careful study, I decided to express myself in the poem written below. I understand and correct me if I am wrong because it is only God who is ever right. I will not include any abusive or inciting words. She said: I would like to take part in the debate initiated by Muuse, moved by Dirirdhabe and the people are my witnesses. When I viewed from all angles without being partisan nor with a hidden agenda, I would like to ask a question: Where were you yesterday did you live when Doraad he was fighting for independence by use of guns and struggling in rain and sunshine? Were you not aware of the sins you accuse him of and who shut your mouth?
Kkkkkkkk, if you lie of the religion you will end up in such problems...!
You must be daydreaming. A child is just a child and a millipede will limp because of one leg. The holy war fighters will win and you journalists should stop lying or else those of you who lie about the holy war fighters will see. I wish the holy war fighters success and the non-Muslims and enemy of Islam failure.
In my opinion, the government has totally failed to provide security to the people who live in areas under its rule such as Baladwein, Baidabo, Afgoye and many other areas in Mogadishu. The other thing is Somali politics has no development and the international community is just looking at these problems caused by the politicians in Somalia. People have started saying Al-Shabaab was better after they realized security was getting worse off and there is no democratic politics which is mindful of the future. Thank you.
I am very happy about the defection of those men from Al-Shabaab. In fact Al-Shabaab and other international terrorist groups have no room in this world particularly when we look at the revolutions going on in the Arab world. These revolutions in the Arab world will rule out the terrorist’s ideologies where they used to make us believe all the Muslims in the Muslim world are being held captives.....................And many others. /////////////////Praise to God if their deception was found and concluded... //////////////////////////////////////////////Journalist .M.S.
These are lies and propaganda that you want to use to mislead the Somalis. The Islamists have brought lasting peace and stability to Somalia, unlike government forces from whom the people ran away wherever they go because of the problems they cause to the Somali people. I would like to tell you to stop your cheap criticism about Al-Shabaab because you have nothing better than them.
I pray to God to help the Muslims and their supporters to defeat the non-Muslims. I would like to urge the Muslims to be aware of the non-Muslims as their greatest enemy, and that non-Muslims are keen on their destruction.
Kudos to the KDF who were the game changer. Why did the al shabab think they can take the KDF and win? Tthey are blinded by they faith but now must wake up to the reality. Faith should not replace common sense. Use your head not your heart to make decisions
In my opinion, only words of mouth will not help and we need to tell one another the truth. All Somalis are Muslims and they can differentiate between their friends and enemies. What is going on here is war of words and it is up to those who will believe it but I don’t think this information is right because we all know this kind of war was in existence for 3 years. We do read reports about towns recaptured and ongoing head-on fights. Thus, it’s obvious that AMISOM is orally sustaining the war so that they can extend their stay in Somalia as this will help them raise more money from their sponsors. AMISOM is there to make money but not to help Somalia. I think the Somalis need to identify their interest and should stop relying on the international community and IGAD. It seems the world has worked on and agreed to disappoint the Somalis. The Somalis are every time forced to be led by a thief bearing the name tag ‘Muslim’ and imposed on them. This kind of leaders are said to be working on the common good of the people so as to make the Somalis believe their lies as they steal our resources. They hide from the Somalis of the stolen treasures during the fight for independence when SYL office was burnt in 1948 and pro-Italy restored. When Somali national flag was raised the country was put under the rule of bootlickers.
It is an issue that requires concentration for us to know the real meaning of this document. If what it says is true then it should be of help to them. African leaders including the leaders of Kenya should be cautious of such misguided youth if the Somali youth have joined Al-Shabaab due to unemployment as there is massive unemployment in the entire continent of Africa caused by corruption. African leaders should embark on formulating policies that will help create employment opportunities more suitable than the jobs given Somali youth by Al-Shabaab. But if this is nothing but exaggerated rumors, then it will give Kenya Security Forces a chance to capture many Somali youth in the military and deny them their rights. I would like to urge Al-Shabaab to fear God and not to mislead the people. You can also learn from the leading Muslim clerics who are well-versed with the religion.
I strongly support eradication of Al-Shabaab because they caused havoc in the country and killed many Somalis who were able to survive the 30 years of civil war in just one year. They killed many children, innocent people and have no respect for the religion of Islam. They are bulls with no mercy.
I think we should arrest and punish the remnants of Al-Shabaab because the youth who joined Al-Shabaab due to monetary gains, can still cause havoc if they get a situation similar to the one we faced before. They need to be rehabilitated and integrated into the society, so that they embark on developmental programmes. That is all.
kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk this world is very funny. Stop lying to the people and giving support to stinking non-Muslims. Will they protect you from the wrath of God in the hereafter? Hold yourself accountable before your deeds are counted in hereafter. I would like to tell Kenyan Forces, we are not real men if they stay in Somalia by the beginning of next year.
This shows that Al Shareer’s military might is weakening and that is victory for the people living in Somalia, especially the capital city. I pray to the almighty God that this enemy be defeated, God willing.
I think that the youth were forcefully armed and they have seen a lot of bloodshed. Theirs is not a normal condition and I would suggest they should have some supervisors and they should not be harmed. Instead, a camp should be created for them to try and change their lifestyle to a joyful one.
THEY THEMSELVES AND THEIR RELATIVES CLAIM THEY JOINED AL kabab FOR MONEY SO THEY WER MERCENARIES! YET THEY TOOK FORCEBLY INNOCENT SOMALI GIRLS AS CHILD BRIDES CLAIMING THEY WER RELIGIOUS FIGHTERS SO WER THESE GIRLS MARRIED OR RAPED ! lets start making excuses for them now! we need someone to blame ,i blame the saudis
For how long will we be fighting this people before winning?even if it means sending all the soldiers to fight Al- Shabaab let the government do it
So its okay to welcome back someone who is willing to fight for money. Correct me if I'm wrong... but he came back because "We were trudging across harsh landscape with little or no food and no pay and facing the prospect of shelling from the air and on the ground." He then continues to say, "I joined al-Shabaab as a job, but for the last six months we had not been paid,"....
Fine that the defectors are begining to come out openly, the only worry is : is Kenya prepared to welcome back a youth force trained in guerrila wwarfare with nothing else to do except hang about or go into the 'jua kali' - informal sector. Do we have a capacity to debrief, monitor and re admit them to be full players in our society's economic life? Are we able to sort out the issues that made it so worthwhile for these people to join the Al-shabaab in the first place?
thankyou amison for uniting , the saying of united we stand has now come true. lets this bond of unity be strengthened but donot forget that it was God who has brought the victory. remember when God is on your side you are always safe.
Kipchumbah, Your comments are spot on. These youths were unemployed for a very long time. They were vulnerable and easy to recruit in the ranks of the Al-Shabaab. It requires the Governments to create an enabling environments to attract private investments in all corners of the countries directly invloved in the conflict. To a greater extent, allow me to say that private investments that create jobs only exist in large capitals notably Nairobi. This creates a loppsided growth and brings dissent from other town areas. If the policy of a balanced regional development can be ushered in, then you shall start to see calm returning to this disturbed area. With the discovery of oil resources, it goes without mention that if the revenues acrruing from the sale is NOT equitably shared across the board, you are bound to have even a worse case than what you see happening. Policy is just inadequate to meet the needs of a sprawling and informed youthful population.
Why are all these comments one sided and seem to be suspeciosly moderated!!!!
These deserters are traitors abd they should be SHOT!
we should all understand that these are the last days and we should get ready for all what was writen is being fulfilled so let keep watch
Let the government monitor these youths. Let them register, and they can be used to reveal so many secrets about Al shabab
Honestly this is a necessity and the community needs assistance and this should be continued. Thanks very much to the Chelsea supporters.
Good sign that our own who were recruited to fight their relatives have decided to come back home. As we receive them, we should now use the opportunity to find out the factors that forced them join. As along term the government should think of how to address these factors for Kenyans to feel secure and provided for in their own country. Amnesty is good and rehabilitative. But they will require more structured rehabilitative measures to facilitate their 'return normal lives' and resettlement
I THINK THAT KENYANS SHOULD BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE RETURNEES U NEVER NOW
The kenyan government is worried sick about the al shabaab.with their incursion into somalia, spokes soldier maj.gen.chirchir who is my favourite army man swore that kdf will not retreat untill kenya is safe(i hope he is still in uniform and not gone for retirement).the shabaab might bring more deaths during the election time.we have a corrupt police force,a poorly funded intelligence agency and an army who is still new in the job of killing (they have been overseas keeping PEACE).the west has failed to get hold of the shabaab.we should bring in men who know their job right.boys who do thier job clean.i prefer ISRAEL our long oustanding friend.
A I-shabaabs is not a small issue as many people have been taking it. I think Kenyans should be happy about thje curent state of improvement on dealing wsith the Alshabaabs. All the same, Kenya has to strengthen her forces to ensure that the started efforts do not end. We all hope that this deviants will be dealt with categoriously and carcafoniously. Kenya will one time become peaceful and enjoy her sovereignty as an independent nation. God Bless Kenya, God Bless Kenyans!
Al-Shabaab denies East Africa its hard earned freedom that it deserves. The death of this vigilante group should have happened sooner but I know one person in Somalia can sleep smiling because of the AMISOMs work ! Thank you Kenya
the best thing we should do about the defectors is to encourage them to leave the activities of the terror group and denounce them openly and let the authorities have their names registered for eassy management of their movement.
The goverment needs to be careful and keep track of these youth, they could be on a mission of surveying the situation in kenya and giving information to al shabaab, they are the same who could be used to launch attacks. They should be welcome back but watched closely.
lets welcome our brothers home. However, great cautioin be taken. They may turn into worse sect like the Mungiki.Let them not be allowed to join our armed forces as way of rehabilitating them and providing jobs for them. The NSIS should by now have gurned enough information about the terrorist group from these Kenyans.
The Al Shabbab deserters shoulder be helped if they are really genuine deserters but they should be watched very closely in case they are trying to enter Kenya as deserters to operate behind the lines while pretending to be deserters.
THESE GUYS SHOULD WATCHED WITH A CLINICAL EYE FOR ANY SUSPICIOUS MOVES COZ ITS EVIDENT THAT THE AMOURY IS ALREADY IN THE COUNTRY READY FOR USE,LET US NT FORGET THAT WE ARE SITTING ON A TIMED BOMB.
True i think these youths should be rounded up and prosecuted. They did not inform anyone when they went joining the alshabab now that they want refuge they come pretending they are good citizens, they are the ones in future who will liasse with their somali tribesmen and attack Kenyans. Kenya has been linient for a long time now that somalia is going to be peaceful after alshabab has been defeated all somalis should go back home and establish themselves. It is strange that we have kenyan somalis but we do not have somalis kenyans.
i support their idea of leaving Al shabaab. but then they should come out and let everyone know about this so that the authorities can know how to hanle them, after all they went to search for greener pastures not knowing it cloud turn out to be like this. everyone understants there are no jobs in kenya, but this should not be an excuse for others who will be caught in the same trap for days to come.
MAY GOD HELP US TO ELIMINATE THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE CAUSING HAVOC IN THE COUNTRY
let the govnment induct them "new recruits " into KDF,because they have military background which is a plus for them, further more they possess vital information about the terror group that could be of use to kenya sectret service.
This is a sign that KDF'S action is felt. The government however must ensure that the youths are engaged, this will make their mind not to be a devil's workshop.Congrats to my brothers who have come back to their mother land.
That's a good thing coming from the Kenyan defense forces
The idea of our youths deserting the terror group and coming back home is ver positive. However, these youths needs to be rehabilitated and alternative sustainable ways of addressing the underlying issues that made them join the terror group be put in place to constructively utilize their immense resourcefulness. We need these youths to build our country not to destroy it. The government must take this challenge very, very serious.
Al-Shabaab members from Southern Somalia will only change their uniform and go to their homes but where will those young guys from northern Somalia who don’t know the tradition and the accent of the people of southern Somalia go? The names of those men who live in Awdal, Hargeisa and Burro and who have sent their children are know and they will be questioned of the where abouts of these children who have nowhere to run. I feel sorry for these misguided children. I can remember the problems we have undergone to travel through southern Somalia to the northern part immediately after the civil war begun.
It is welcomed news that the hooded men were done away with, basically for their bad administrative systems. They were assisted by the Somalis when they were fighting with Ethiopia. They cry to the Somalis for help now by claiming they are being eliminated by foreigners, when they have initially forced many Somali ladies into marriage with foreigners they brand ‘holy war fighters.’ Kenya Defense forces know how to rape or take bribes Somali ladies only.
They should be placed under the spie glass, they might be on a mission. The government should not relent on the operation both in Somalia and here in Kenya. Kudos KDF. Jumong
Somalia should realize that Al Shabaab is being supported from within by selfish individuals. It is public knowledge that Ali Deere and his followers who used to lie to us should prepare for the backlash from our side on 1st August.
We need to have all those who were recruited to surrender to the GOK and help flush out the other remnants with the view of rehabiitating them for their own good and in the interest of all mankind, every human beings life is precious and we need to genuinely turn to our Heavenly maker for proper guidance! It is time to say enough is enough no more bloodshed!
Al Shabaab is a religious group which lacks in ideology and has misled the youth to believe they are working for their Islamic religion. This can be overcome by our clerics who need to educate the misguided youth on the true religious teachings and in that way save the large number of youths who have joined Al Shabaab from being misguided through religion.
Peace on you all, my opinion is that if there were measures to support the welfare of the youth then we would never see any supporting Al Shabaab. This is because there is no government in Somalia which supports youth employment; all the same I would urge the sympathizers of Al Shabaab who did so due to lack of employment to consider the lives they are taking in the name of earning some salary. They need to return to the almighty God.
its gud to hear this but am a fried some of them maybe cunning, could be suicide bombers sent on a mission,,,kenyan intelligence to take note of them.
If you want lies to be written for you, just tell me and I will come up with the best lies. Do you fear Kenya Defense Forces who have no idea about war? Can someone who fought with Ethiopia be afraid of Kenya defense Forces? People tell lies but not so shamelessly like you did.
NOW WE(KENYANS&SOMALIS IN PARTICULAR) CAN FEEL AT EASE BECAUSE THESE ARE SIGNS OF A DEFEAT OF ALSHABAAB MEANING A NEW GOVERNMENT IN SOMALI.GREAT THANKS KDF TOGETHER WITH OTHER AFRICAN FORCES INCLUDING FOREIGN SUPPORTERS.
God is good, the company Somcable Ltd has taken major steps in bringing major developments in the republic of Somaliland. We are all saying welcome for what you are doing is great especially regarding telecommunications. Thank you very much 30/6/2012
that is abig lie, please stop misleading the citizens.there is no youth went back.they are all infront so stop spreading lies.
Kenya, along with outside help need to make sure these kids can find jobs and businesses or education and training. They also should not be so confident, yes Al Shabab have been heavily damage over the last year and they currently have few if any safe havens left, apart from Yemen. This however does not mean the threat is over, if a government does not materialise to run Somalia in the next year then Al Shabab will regroup and come back or another group will take their place.
Al-Shabaab was defeated, really defeated but the Quastion is Who Defeated?. We Believe that Ugada, Brundi and Ethiopian Forces Fought and Defeated Al-shabaab while Kenyan Forces Claiming to be in the Battle Field are still at the Border Villages asking the Desbrate Refugees fleeing from Al-shabaab what they call KIBANDA or Kenyan ID. Man is the one who accepts the Death.
enlisting in a foreign army is a crime. those youths should be rounded up and prosecuted like any other dangerous criminals.
Our defence team should not take it as that it could be a trap nevertheless its good to hear and have our heroes back home kudo kdf
These are hard times. We should all return to the almighty God and God willing I believe everywhere a Muslim lives the almighty God is doing something positive. Personally I am not supporting Al Shabaab but I urge the people not to forget justice. Peace be on you all Muslims.
I think the Government and the so called NGO should come up with ways that will help the deserters who are coming back "home" to be intergrated and start a new life.
