In an audio recording released Monday (June 18th) on Radio Andalus, the mouthpiece for al-Shabaab, the group's leader Ahmed Abdi Godane, also known as Mukhtar Abu al-Zubair, called on his fighters to stand firm on the battlefields, promising paradise to whomever dies defending their religion.

"Victory remains in the hands of the mujahedeen," Godane said in his message. "The world is teaming up to occupy Somalia under the pretext of fighting the al-Shabaab mujahedeen group."

However, political and security analysts who have been monitoring the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab movement say Godane's message is an attempt to raise morale among his fighters, and is nothing short of a confession that the movement is nearing defeat after losing several of its key strongholds in southern and central Somalia.

Al-Shabaab in an 'unenviable situation'

Political analyst and expert on Islamist groups in Somalia Mohamed Hassan said the al-Shabaab movement is in "a state of utter frustration bordering on despair".

"Godane's message is a confession that his fighters have been defeated in the current battles in Somalia, so he is trying to boost low morale among the rebel ranks," he told Sabahi.

"Al-Shabaab is in a difficult and unenviable situation, one that is highly dangerous as a result of military pressure from multiple fronts, which is why the movement is struggling to stay alive," Hassan said.

In his message, Godane also called on Somali tribes to join the so-called jihad against the Somali and African Union forces and their allies.

"We call on all Somali tribes to join jihad and to support efforts of establishing an Islamic state that would represent an umbrella for all Muslims in the region," Godane said.

"This [invitation] will fall on deaf ears and will not be heeded by Somali tribes," said Mogadishu-based political analyst Abdinaasir Osman.

"Somali tribes do not support terrorism and there is no tribal support for groups that reject peace," he told Sabahi. "The tribes stand by the state and proof of this is the meeting that brought together all the Somali tribal elders from all over the country in Mogadishu to select the delegates of the [National] Constituent Assembly and members of the new parliament."

Osman said the Somali people, especially those living in areas under al-Shabaab's control, have suffered and are still suffering from the movement's hard-line approach and draconian measures, which is why there are no tribes sympathetic to the call of the al-Shabaab leader.

A downward spiral

Ali Ahmed, a security analyst and retired officer from the Somali army, said al-Shabaab is in a downward spiral facing mounting regional military campaigns against it.

"If the current military campaign against al-Shabaab continues in its intensity, then it is [highly] likely that this movement will cease to have a strong military presence in a matter of months," Ahmed told Sabahi.

"What we see today is that al-Shabaab has found itself in a serious crisis and that it is suffering heavy losses, not to mention that its fighters are withdrawing without resistance from every town that the Somali armed forces and African Union troops are approaching," he said. "This is an indication that the combat capability of the group has been weakened."

During the past few months, al-Shabaab lost several key cities and towns, most recently Afgoye and Afmadow. Analysts say these victories achieved by the Somali army, with support from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and allied regional troops, compounded by al-Shabaab's loss of its main strongholds and strategic cities, dealt a serious blow to the movement.

As Somali and African Union forces advance, all eyes are now on their last remaining stronghold, the port city of Kismayo.

"The national army, with support of friendly forces, are tightening the noose around al-Shabaab in the city of Kismayo," said Colonel Daahir Abdulqadir, one of the commanders of the Somali Armed Forces in Lower Juba.

"We are preparing to launch the final attack on Kismayo because seizing this city represents the final blow to the group," he told Sabahi.

Abdulqadir said al-Shabaab does not have the power necessary to defend the city and will likely flee to the thick forests outside the city.

'Last nail in al-Shabaab's coffin'

Since the United States announced on June 7th a $33 million bounty for seven of al-Shabaab's top leaders, several media outlets have reported them fleeing Kismayo. Security analysts say these rewards will increase pressure on al-Shabaab.

"If Kismayo falls in the hands of Somali government forces, al-Shabaab would then be in a politically, financially and militarily desperate situation that would drive the last nail in al-Shabaab's coffin," Abdulqadir said.

The port of Kismayo is thought to provide substantial income to al-Shabaab and is considered to be a lifeline for the movement in terms of funding. Making matters worse for al-Shabaab are the internal divisions and deep differences among al-Shabaab leaders.

"Divisions within al-Shabaab are deepening due to current setbacks as the group loses most of its key strongholds," said political analyst and activist Ahmed Aadan.

"This issue has come to the fore after the group announced it would join al-Qaeda last February, and since then, internal divisions have been on the rise day after day," he told Sabahi.

Al shabab has caused a lot of damage and loss of life in Somalia and these has affected the lives of many youths. As we know young people are very energetic and are mostly involved in sporting activities. Because of Al shabab this has not been possible because the young people are being abducted and forced to become fighter in the Al shabab. This has killed any enthusiasm by the young people. The terror group has also made the country very unsafe and it is potentially dangerous to hold any sporting activity because of the fear of getting attacked by the insurgents.

Any Somali or Muslim who supports Al-Shabaab is either blind or simply as sick as those hooligans calling themselves Al-Kabab. We should be very careful in choosing partners. I have personally witnessed their heinous act and know from that experience how sick they are. Anyone who commits a crime against humanity should not be tolerated. This should also serve as a warning to the TFG soldiers and AMISOM forces. They must realize that their biggest task is actually winning the hearts and minds of the public and should therefore treat the ordinary people with kid gloves. Al-Shabaab is loosing its battles because the Somali public are tired of their lies and atrocities, not because they have less firepower. You can never win a war without the support of the public. These ordinary person, whether poor farmers or hungry herdsmen, are the same people who n only give you credible intelligence reports as well as whereabouts of your enemy simply because you can never be everywhere all the time. Let us pray for Somalia because the coming few months are very crucial with the end of the transition period for the TFG and the end of Al-Shabaab dominance. What will happen next will depend a lot with how we handle ourselves today, tomorrow and next month, whether in the battlefield or in the political front.

It is only the Almighty God who knows about heaven and/or hell. How can a human being promise others that they will go to heaven while he has never gone there himself? my brothers wake up! al-shabaab is a dying horse and are desperate for their own survival. our somali brothers have suffered for a very long time and now they have a chance for a peace in their country. finally, going by what is happening in somalia now, it is clear that african problems need african solutions, military or otherwise.

Al-shabaab terror attacks against Kenya Christian Church is a sign of defeat. why target innocent civilians who are worshipping and praising God? if they are men enough, then they should target the men in uniform who are forcing them to flee major towns under their control. telling the somali people to join jihad against the AMISOM forces is a defeatist move. the commander can not promise heaven. he should be promising hell to his followers

Recently we saw the Al shabab embrace Al –Qaida, this is a deliberate move by the group because they want to feel connected with a powerful group from the Middle East. The Al shabab formerly pledged their allegiance to the Al Qaeda this can be seen as a desperate move by the al shabab to strengthen them and be able to ask for financial and weaponry help from the seasoned group. The groups have also linked because they share the same ideologies and they fight for the same cause. The Al-shabab is a young group so they need all the help they can get in terms of training and planning. The group may have also embraced their Middle Eastern counterpart to intimidate their enemies. They want to make other countries fear them because they have linked their forces; we see that the al shabab need the al Qaeda because they are weak.

This, am addressing all Somalis'. ..... You have suffered for so long. Unless you decide indecisively this is the turning point, then its business as usual. And not even AMISON can do a thing. No body will choose your fate. its only you who can do it. Please let history be your guide. Have a look at countries like Germany, Italy and Japan... see how they rose from the ashes to once again be world leaders. Somali Clan leaders, you have a chance now, seize the moment. Make it count. In ten years, lets all be talking of a peaceful successful Somalia.

With no KDF, alshabab will be still alive, free and sound. Kudos to this awesome, disciplined force that has sacrificed alot to save the people of Somalia. To the cowards who are attacking civilians in churches and social places, mark my words, your days are numbered and you will die terribly. Remember when you kill by sword you die by it and thus no other option to that. It will be a brighter day when Somalia will embrace peace and unity, when killings and massacres will be history and when security for each and every person will be assured.

Hi Alshabaab cowards. Why on earth do you kill non-combatants? You are so desperate that you want to create the impression of Religious conflict in Kenya. We are too civilized for such ushamba! Kenya is a multi-religious nation and we live in peace and harmony. You will never see anybody confront you on the basis of your religion. You are just a bunch of criminals with no basic education and therefore lack basic common sense. Anyway its good for you if you think God will grant you paradise for killing unarmed women and children in places where he is worshipped. Go for it. Paradise awaits. Hahahahahahahaha!!! Why doesnt your leader go blow himself? Isnt he interested in paradise himself? If dying in the process of killing is so cool according to your crooked belief, why did Osama hide in rocks like a rat for so long? Why was he scampering behind a woman when the Americans came to roost? He should have died smiling with the knowledge that paradise is just but a death away! I believe anyone who kills in the name of religion doesnt know God. God is love. Love is tolerance (subra) and harmony. You are not true Muslims. You are ignorant, conflicted, evil Kaffirs!!! Blow yourselves even more... and while you are at it, please request your leader to blow himself also. Afterall, paradise awaits. Ama? :-)

Many people may b believe that its a religious war which is not. i think its high time for the Muslim leaders to come-out strong against this groups by explaining to the public the meaning of such words like JIHAD through newspapers and other social media like facebook Twitter etc. am 110% sure that the leaders of this groups dont know much about the Koran, they only pick those words frm Koran which suits their purpose. am not a muslim but i dont like the way other denominations r made to believe that Muslim r aganist them. The people of Kenya, and the Christians in particular, have nothing to gain from a military offensive on Somali soil to spread Christianity as the Al Shabaab allege. We Kenyans do not like war. It is counter-productive overall and in many respects - just plain stupid. Our grandfathers fought the British during the latter's occupation of Kenya. It is from what they experienced that they taught our parents that war should be avoided at all costs unless it is really necessary. It is what our parents have taught us. Therefore, the allegations that Kenya invaded Somalia to spread Christianity are asinine and malicious. In general, Christians in the modern day do not attack whole territories to spread religion. Kenya does not desire to infringe on the dignity, pride and religion of the Somali people. We however insist that Somalia gets its governance right so that it can effectively handle extremist elements within its borders after AMISOM winds up operations. We Kenyans do not want again to bear the brunt of a restive Somalia, with its fights spilling over into our country. We value peace, harmony and unity. It is when elements - within and out of our borders - threaten this that we are willing to flood our soil with our blood to defend our country. Kenya is not the U.S.A. It is a great honour to die for our country. On the other hand, we do not follow due process with cowards who go about spreading anarchy. We'll just behead them instead, and let hyenas and vultures feast.

  • Okeno a.k.a Chile
    July 2, 2012 @ 08:12:34PM

Being a terrorist is a waste of time and brains tell al-shbaab nowadays wars are stupidity they should focus on living on this planet to enjoy life since no one Knows if there is life after death because it has never been proven yet and so whoever cares about good life after death is a fool. Killing of innocent people should be punished by Massacre pf the perpetrators. Kudos goes to KDF and now I can be proud to be a Kenyan. To those KDF Soldiers Who have died for their country they should remember that they are more appreciated back home by embrancing their deaths like real soldiers than the cowards who beg for more life on this planet when their time to die has arrived. is the physical war the last option? wot if we try diplomacy? most of our actions are propelled by our low levels of literacy maybe we should extend our education in somalia. education is the background of our human rights awereness. if we get to know the relevance of human dignity, no one would attempt to disrupt order in the international system. resourse scarsity and poverty should not be the reason for conflict and loss of lives of innocent people. every individual has a right to life. lets resolve our conflicts diplomatically and avoid blood shed in the name of our frontiers.

For the first time the world has realised that African military is the best in the world. The whole world had given up on Somalia until Kenya's KDF forces decided enough was enough and as nationlastic soldiers, decided to bring peace to its desperate neighbour. Kudos KDF forces. Americans with their drone misiles ran away and left Somalia with their tails curled, the whole of Eurupean forces dreaded Somalia. Others came and left, but KDF has done what was just about a year ago was thought unthinkable. Critics thought Kenya was carzy but we have proven tothe world that we are the best force in the world and we fear no one. No one should therefore try playing around with our territorial boundaries anymore. We shall hit them hard!!! When KDF forces entered Somalia, I almost enlisted in the army just to liberate the long suffering peoples of Somalia. KUDOS KDF, KUDOS KENYA, GOD BLESS KDF, GOD BLESS KENYA

To Somali people, support the efforts of your forces and allies to liberate your country. Lets build a safe, peaceful, prosperous and developing region within East and horn of Africa. You are a hardworking country, we have you in the region and we know how much you are to the region. We are a laughing stock in this region. You are part of the wider region, we have many activities together - remember East and Central Africa football competitions and many other joint activities - you are no longer there - we need you gentlemen and ladies. God bless you all.

While peace must be the guiding tenet in our hearts, a time comes when eye poking, malice, spite, greed, stupidity, mischief, cowardly murders, looting madness, devilish illusions by undefined gangs like the al-shabaab must be stopped to bring civility, order and national sobriety. Only then, a nation will achieve real economic, political and social growth. Why could a few illiterate warlords who have been left for so long to dilapidate life, disorganise social systems, kill their motherland's economy and even extend the same thuggery to a dear neighbor? .. a neghbor that has harbored somali families living among the other peace loving brothers and sisters and treating them like their own. What a shame that a neighbor can turn against the owner of a house that also feeds the neighbor's children? Al-shabaab should not have even imagined of hurting Kenya! It is true that a few casualties have been suffered by the KDF but one real thing is true, That KDF shall not relent until these thugs who know no parent, brother, sister, relative or neighbor are downed flat and erased from any book of history. The intelligent war demostrated by the KDF is quite remarkable because they have gone for the thugs and not for the frustrated civilians. From Africa, they have shown the world how modern wars can be fought through civilian engangement, empathy, winning the victims and intelligently offering brotherly treatment to the culprits. It isn't Swatzenenger or Rambo fictions that count but

This people have denied the Somalis the peace they need. Let them be defeated so that Somalia can once again enjoy their peace. This is a very objective and loaded article. There is no place in the modern world of religious fanaticism-By the way Islam is a peaceful religion-the likes of Alshabaab and Alqaeda have created a wrong impression on the otherwise peaceful group of harmless and peace loving somali tribes. Al'hamdu'Lilah ! Al shabab very much try justifying to be fighting in the name of Islam, Islam does not allow hijacking of other peoples property, Islam does not allow killing of innocent people, Al shabab bombed a graduation of University where graduant doctors died! what Islam was that ? Surely Allah is the judge of all actions, whatever Al shabab did to the Somali people is evident against teachings of islam. The blocked medical & humanitarian aid to Somali people which they organisation could not provide, children died of hunger & deceases. That is not Islamic teachings !

I want to see a somalia where women live happilyand enjoy their rights, can sing and dance at weddings of adults not child marriages! I want to see a Somalia where neighours can visit be welcomed and leave without being harmed. Like we have done for them in Kenya for years.Praying for Somalia to my ABLE Gd is my project.

Murphy for your ionformation the Kenyan forces are closer to Kismayu than any other forces in Somalia, the fact that Kenya does not fight its neighbours its because of the IGAD treaty not to send Soldiers to countries you are Bordering, Uganda does not border Somalia, Ethiopia have their issues with Eritrea that spills to Somalia but Kenya we had none and they are not at war with Somalia they simply invoke article 51 on Un Security allowing them to pursue the militants to their hiding and as thus Somalia is now peacefull all the areas they have taken over. You should learn to accept reality that the dynamics of war is not to be killed but winning with as little or no casualties at all.

leaders should always try to pacify all conflicts wheather low or high coz in the end you can see what has become of our nighbor due to a small disagrement ,there should some kind of dialogic listening to both sides for the common benefit to all protagonists and especially to those who are weak and defenceless ,the whole belongs to those who are powerful and those who are powerless coz for one people to me are power and those who assume the instruments of it must always safegaurd the people rather than ochestrating violence ,peaceful environment creates wealth to the citizens and also their health is good hence a robust economy .it is saddening to see almost all african states are being militarised by those who value power more than the well being of their subjects.

It isn't Swatzenenger or Rambo fictions that count but wits!

Let Al-Shaaab go to hell. The good religion of our Muslim brothers and sisters has been tarnished by these killers marauding as ambassadors of Islam. For sure they will perish.

Fine peace will finally come to our brothers by means of Fire. I wish it came in a Heavenly manner,it would last forever. How is someone out there preparing for a lasting peaceful stability for Somalia ? And by the way, where are these defeated guys running to ? is it in Kenya or in Dadaab as refugees ? How safe are our boundaries today ? Where do they take their Fire arms ? Do they take Peace to where they go ? We hope all will be well. God bless Kenya God bless Somali.

AMISON forces has been in Somalia for long enough with no major gains. The reality is that KDF took Al-Shabaab head on and weakened their operations in Southern Somalia. The intergration of KDF forces into AMISON was a great boost fo AMISON forces who for a long time were busy fighting the Militia in Mogadishu leave alone the Southern strategic towns of Al-Shabaab. Let us give credit where it deserves and encaurage both KDF and AMISON forces to wipe out these thugs completely. Somalis need peace and development......Kudos to KDF and AMISON

Murphy, i am saddenned by your comments. When you talk of the Kenya Army being JUST 60 kms inside Somalia........Understand this; this war is about bringing the rule of law and sanity to that country. I do not know where you come from,BUT ONE THING IS CLEAR.We will never make the mistake the U.S.military made when they entered Somalia.Read and understand your history well. Back to the Kenyan Military; if you have been observant enough, the Kenya Military is NOT racing to occupy Somalia;it its primary objective; capture a few hundred kilometers-put in place proper administrative structures; Chiefs,D Cs,policemen on the ground etc.... The Kenyan Military WILL NEVER make the mistake made by the U.S.Military.

murphy i don't what part of the world you are but nchemuye has stated a fact that the so called super powers will find it hard to swallow. kenya's action was a retaliatory to a small brother's 'misbehavior'. when your young brother breaks the screen of your laptop you don't go overboard and incacerate him. you failed to capture nchemuye's words:..has been able to counter a terrorist group with the meticulous planning, intelligence.... my take in (his/her) words is that unlike other powers whose intention to wipe out such insurgent groups, kenya believes in respect to life, whether one is a criminal or other. in executing collateral attack, many innocent people die and get maimed- KDF & TFG wouldn't want such a scenario- that's why the progress seems slow. IT IS A CALCULATED AND INTELLIGENTLY EXECUTION WITH A HUMAN FACE.

    June 23, 2012 @ 07:19:59PM

Dear Nchemuya, you do not know what you are saying about the whole thing. This is not about who defeats alshabab vs Kenyan army. Too many people have sacrificed so much before November 2011,especially the Somali people themselves. I wish you were in Somalia before(as an individual) then. The army knows better of course and thats why they dont talk much.

Well said nchemuya, the KDF has been able to live with such baseless comments upto even from a regional head of state and extensively from part of own population. Am proud of what they are doing in Somalia. It is high time even kenyan own population appreciated that the absence of war in the country and the peace they enjoyed all this while was as a result of the deterrance achieved by the KDF. Am proud.

I think kenya has her right to defend her people and her economey and our religon does not allowe anyone to disturb his or her neibours kenya is our neibour country and we wronged her by kidnaping her tourist and no one will accept that so in return they acted by going to somalia and am realy happy for that step becouse Alsabaab are not only kenyan enemy but also they are the somali enemies and i wish and pray kenya armies to eliminate them from our country so that we live peace and hormony in our country and with our neibours

This is a health move for people of Somali. They have admired to be at home but the devil Al shaabab chased them. Kenya has housed the migrants. Some fraudly acqiuerd Kenyan citizen documents. Not that they wanted it but it was a place to call home. They wanted to trade, interact and feed their family. The donor suppliment was not enough to feed all. The smile on Kenyan face is seen. A country that was categorically called "Hosting ceremonial army" became the real auther of peace and the casket of Al shaabab. If Kenyan had not send its forces in Somalia, Uganda and Rwanda forces could not manage the Al shaababs. Now called AMISOM, but they expedite their last plans as KDF- Operation Linda Inchi. We are happy now, that the Somalis will not be at home. The little ones will be seeing their ancestral home for the first time. Good help KDF. God help AMISOM.

nchemuya what are you talking about? The Kenyan army has made gains in Somalia but they are still only 60km inside Somalia and so far have not defeated anybody. Kenya only got involved as al shabaab damaged the tourist industry, if no Mzungus had been kidnapped, Kenya would still be a spectator. Kenya owes a great deal of respect to the other african nations who have taken the lead and lost large numbers of soldiers in the process. Kenya does not stand alone and it is not correct that you paint such a picture. Lets hope this conflict ends soon and Somalis can move forward, better for everyone.

the somali people need peace.Lets not use our religion for self glorification. Kenya is the haven for all the somalis, both the jihadist and others. The jihadist made a big mistake by trying to fight Kenya. Kenya is and has always been the source of their livelihood. I think they should have left kenya for their survival. I think all peace loving people pray that one day there will be peace in Somali where they will disccard tribalism.

May God help all those who are fighting to liberate Somalia. Our kinsmen have suffered for long. Death has been the orderof the day and peace is the most burning thirst in the throats of the Somali's. Al Shabaab should think twice, surrender and leave the Somali's to live the lives God wanted them to live.

A lesson for alshabaab and any like minded thugs... just because some countries dont like fighting does not mean they cannot fight. for many years kenya gave alshabaab warnings and tried to encourage them to live civil, progressive lives. but the kindness of the kenyan people was taken for granted. worse, because of kenya's peaceful foreign policy of avoiding conflict at all costs, alshabaab took kenya for a weak toothless dog. Because of alshabaab's greed they started attacking mombasa bound ships, even crossing the borders to attack tourists. And there's even talk that they wanted to assasinate senior goverment officials in kenya. Well... they are now getting what they wanted. i am sure the 'untested and untried' kenyan army has truly been a surprise package. unlike the US, ugandan and ethiopian armies which bomb everything that moves, the kenya army executed a strategy that outsmarted, frustrated and ultimately totally defeated the terror gang every step of the way. No one dare says this (almost everyone gave 'little untested untried' kenya army absolutely no chance in november as they moved into somalia), but the truth is no other army in the recent past has been able to counter a terrorist group with the meticulous planning, intelligence and with such rapid gains as the kenya army.
