Analysts: Al-Shabaab turns to female suicide bombers as last resort

Somali analysts told Sabahi that a female suicide bomber's attack at Mogadishu's National Theatre on Wednesday (April 4th) shows that al-Shabaab is having difficulty recruiting suicide bombers and is recruiting female suicide bombers as a last ditch effort to change its terrorist strategy.

"It appears that al-Shabaab is facing difficulty convincing individuals to carry out suicide attacks, which is why it has resorted to female suicide bombers in an attempt to change the strategy of its terrorist operations," said political analyst Yusuf Mohammed, a former member of the Islamic Courts Union's Shura council.

"The methods used by terrorists shows they are enemies of peace and the Somali people," Mohammed told Sabahi, adding that al-Shabaab's acts show utter disregard for human life.

At least six people were killed and 10 were injured when the young woman detonated an explosives belt, targeting Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali and other ministers in attendance. The al-Qaeda allied al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This suicide attack was the first of its kind targeting the National Theatre since it reopened last month after 20 years, a powerful symbol of change. It comes at a time Mogadishu is witnessing an improved security situation due to the expulsion of al-Shabaab in August 2011.

"The fact that terrorists target places filled with civilians is the biggest indication of their weakness and inability to confront the armed forces on the battlefield. It is unclear why they would randomly target civilians," Mohammed said. "Moreover, suicide attacks perpetrated by women are a foreign concept to Somali culture. If anything, this shows that [al-Shabaab] is finding it difficult to recruit elements that would carry out suicide attacks because they ruin the hopes and dreams of the Somali people."

This is the second time a woman has perpetrated such an attack in Somalia. In June 2011, former Minister of Interior and Security Abdishakur Sheikh Hassan was killed in a similar attack in his home in Mogadishu.

Political analyst Mukhtar Abdinur says that what happened at the National Theatre cannot be attributed to fragile security in Mogadishu. "Despite the Somali government's efforts to tighten security in the city, the extremists are trying to change their strategy by using female suicide bombers; this is their last resort," he told Sabahi. He said he expects the Somali people to overcome such challenges in their struggle for peace.

Woman slips through security

Security officials have said the perpetrator behind this suicide attack was a woman disguised as a police officer. Mohammed Said, a guard at the theatre, said that the attacker insisted on entering the theatre, claiming that she was a police officer.

"We stopped her, but some of the prime minister's bodyguards told us to let her in as long as she carried police identification," Said told Sabahi. He said she blew herself up seconds after Prime Minister Ali approached the podium to deliver his speech.

Somali and African Union security forces were responsible for security at the theatre, subjecting those entering the theatre to a search.

"We do not know how she managed to get inside the theatre because there was a thorough security check that applies to all visitors of the theatre, including the members of parliament as soon as they enter the theatre's lobby," Member of Parliament Mohammed Omar Dalha told Sabahi.

International leaders condemn attack

The sports community in Somalia lost two of its distinguished figures in the attack: Said Mohamed Nur "Mugaanbe", president of the Somali Football Federation, and Aadan Haaji Yabaroow "Wiish", president of the Somali Olympic Committee.

The Somali transitional government, the United Nations and the African Union strongly condemned the attack.

UN Special Representative for Somalia Ambassador Augustine Mahiga said, "The future of Somalia cannot be held hostage to a violent minority who resort to cowardly terrorist acts that target their fellow citizens." He called on the Somali nation and its leaders to reconfirm their determination towards peace and reconciliation.

"We must not let this tragic event derail the progress that is being made in Somalia," he said. "The reopening of the National Theatre is symbolic of the real change that is happening in Somalia: the city is being rebuilt, culture is being revived and hope is being restored."

Brigadier General Audace Nduwumunsi, deputy force commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia, described the attack on the theatre as a heinous crime committed against the Somali people.

"Yet again the terrorists' methods show that they are enemies of peace and are foreign to Somali culture," he said. "By their attack they are trying to derail the hopes and dreams of the Somali people but they will fail."

"This terrorist act shows how desperate the terrorists are, as they were defeated in the battlefields. The terrorist al-Shabaab group is drawing its last breath," said Prime Minister Ali, telling AFP he was the target of the attack.

"These desperate and monstrous acts by extremists will not deter us and will not prevent us from undertaking our national duty. On the contrary, they strengthen our resolve to crush these terrorists and bring about lasting peace and stability in our country and for our people," he said.

"Attacking the theatre was a cowardly act that proves that the terrorists are desperate," said President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. "They are trying to impede the progress made by the Somali people and try to destroy their hopes for peace and stability throughout the country. The Somali government condemns this barbaric attack and sends its condolences to the families of the victims and wishes for a speedy recovery for those that were injured".

Ahmed called on the Somali people to stand united against those that are killing the Somali people, pledging to eliminate terrorist groups very soon.

Peace on you. After greetings, I would like to say that everyone defines the word terrorist in his own way and mine is not an exception. In my own definition I understand terrorists as people who invade a Muslim country and kill the Muslims. Who do you know as a terrorist in your own definition?  I understand a terrorist as one who fights Islam and kills the Muslims who likes using the Islamic Sheriah. Who can we call terrorists? The Muslims who are fighting to defend their religion from enemies or those invading Islam? I don’t recognize Al-Shabaab as terrorists. Al-Shabaab is the only group fighting to defend both the religion and the Somalis from enemies and if I may ask you; my brothers, who is violating the right of the other between an invader and the one defending Islam and Somalis from invasion?

Freedom, humanity and the good name the Somalis were known for are all under threat. This was spearheaded by the clerics who came to us in the name of Union of Islamic courts. This group is composed of Al-Shabaab and those in the government led by Sheikh Sharif. They sold the ocean of Somalia to Kenya and everyone knows that. They have confused lies for politics.  They have begun negotiating with Somaliland now. What do they know about why Somaliland wants to become an independent country? Why don’t they just say Somaliland should be given recognition as an independent state?

I can assure you that the statement I read from the website was meant to mock Al-Shabaab. I would like to tell you that it is not only men who die for the sake of God in defending the religion. Islam as a religion was revealed to guide both men and women and they have equal responsibility in defending it. All Muslims have equal responsibility and our unity, regardless of gender to defend the religion is paramount. Your statements will not demoralize and is in fact nothing to the holy war fighters but it is unfortunate to hear such allegations from Muslims whose minds were poisoned and yet thinking that they are right. Most of you have been besieged mentally to an extent that you were made to believe that Islam is about terrorism. Terrorists are those who nurse the idea of changing your religion and desirable culture with a long-term plan of 100 years to come. The truth is that a non-Muslim will get a 3% benefit that will affect our future Muslim generation in anything good they do for us at the moment. Al-Shabaab is a group composed of rightly guided people and we also pray to God to lead us to the straight path. I would like to conclude that the Muslim community believes in the words of God (we will protect the religion) and I am sure Islam will win.

How best can we describe Somalia as a country?

The Muslim historians call this ideology ‘Khawariji’ meaning ‘the defectors’ from the Islamic religion. This ideology is not only confined to a particular country and time, in the Muslim world but everywhere the Muslims live! They live and do business in Hargeisa. They do bother a lot about whether their business is based on legal or illegal means but not true to their words and quickly change their stand. Whether they suspect that the basic source of their work was illegal with regards to the Islamic law they forgo it. (A good example of this, is where I asked a member of this group with 2 families and who wanted to resign from his job on such grounds, why doesn’t he wait till he gets another job? He replied that he suspects the capital that was started with the business he works for was from custom duty, then I told him that it is only God who knows the source of the business capital and he should continue working there, so long as he was legally working for the business. He refused my advice and resigned from the job!!! I have seen him working with the company again hardly after a month. Therefore this ideology is not only confined to only one community or country but is found everywhere in the Muslim world. If it is supported, it becomes strong and difficult to tolerate.

PEACE ON YOU. AFTER GREETINGS, IF I EXPRESS MY FEELINGS, I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT WE ARE UNDER A BIG THREAT FROM AL-SHABAAB. THESE MEN HAVE PLANTED A SEED OF DISCORD IN THE SOMALI COMMUNITY. THEY ARE A VIRUS AND WILL AFFECT ANYONE WHO DOES NOT HAVE A STRONG AND CURRENTLY UPDATED ANTI-VIRUS. I WOULD TO URGE PARENTS TO BE CAREFUL WITH THOSE WHO THEY ENTRUST WITH THEIR CHILDREN TO TEACH THEM IN SCHOOL. IF WE FAIL TO BE CAREFUL WITH THOSE WHO TEACH OUR CHILDREN IN SCHOOL, THEN WE SHOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO SEE OUR CHILDREN BLOWING UP THEMSELVES IN SUICIDE ATTACK WITH MISGUIDED IDEOLOGIES OF GOING TO PARADISE IF THEY BLOW UP THEMSELVES. AS SOMALIS, I THINK IT IS OUR HIGH TIME TO DEFEND OURSELVES FROM THESE VIRUS INVADING BOTH OUR PEOPLE AND WEALTH.......THANK YOU.

There is no doubt that Al-Shabaab is a global terrorist network, therefore the Somalis should be cautious of this terrorist group and at the same time, try to comprehend their source of income, leadership and ideologies. If you endeavor to understand all these aspects of the group I mentioned, you will definitely realize that Al-Shabaab is a section of Salafi Jihadist movement organized and administered in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are funded by Saudi Arabia which is the country where they get their training to disrupt the restoration of peace in Somalia. Saudi Arabia’s mission for funding this group is to disrupt the exploration and drilling of the excess oil found in Somalia for fear of competing with the oil produced by Saudi and other Gulf Arab states. Saudi is trying by all means to disrupt the world maritime trade by funding pirates to hijack ships sailing through the sea.

Al-Shabaab should come up with a better and lasting solution to restore peace in the country instead of killing the people for no reason. Don’t you fear the curse of the Muslims you are killing for no reason? Don’t you sympathize with your fellow Somalis who were befallen by disasters or you are bastards sent by foreign forces who feel no mercy for the Somalis community? Do you think Al-Shabaab is an Islamic organization? As evident in the way they commit genocide of innocent people in the country, they seem to be working for foreign agents who were chased from their country for causing problems. If you fail to protect your country from these foreigners they take over our country.

May God have mercy on all the civilians and all those who fall victims of the violence, crimes, brutality, harshness and evil committed by those groups and gangs that tamper with the stability and security of many countries, including Somalia. This country witnesses the presence of the al-Shaban Group. They corrupted the lives of the poor Somali citizens, who have faced many bitter, painful and horrendous challenges and difficulties. A lot of innocent blood was shed, and they did nothing wrong, especially when it comes to the suicide bombings that led to the death of many innocent people. They were victims of the terrorist operations committed by al-Shabab, which executed many malicious, brutal terrorist operations against the Somali people. May God have mercy on all the innocent people whose blood was shed and whose lives were ended by the groups of the al-Shabab movement, which execute suicide bombings! They make use of the youth to implement those operations and attack the innocent citizens. They exploit the youth by tempting them with money and pushing them to implement the suicide bombings that lead to the death of many innocent people. May God curse, humiliate and disgrace them for being the reason of the violence, crimes and brutality that are currently happening.

I would like to salute you all. I support this editorial but I would like to urge you not to write reports that you are not sure of because it will confuse the readers. The media has given out 18 different versions of the incident that happened. It was once reported that the security official had taken money to collaborate with the criminals, it was another time reported that the incident that happened was done by the security officials of the prime minister, the media also reported that the incident was planned to assassinate the prime minister by some of the government officials. Another version concerning the incident aired by the media said that it was planned for tribal revenge. We are wondering with which of the versions of the story reported is right and which one is false. Contradicting reports distort the truth of the matter and leave the readers confused. I would to urge the Somali media and the journalists not to write anything said by the people and try to make sense of what you say. I do not live in Mogadishu but in my opinion, I think the explosion was facilitated by AMISOM because AMISOM forces are in Somalia to get money from the African Union, hence, they can be given money more than they expect from the African Union from Al-Shabaab. According to reports released by the media, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the explosion by saying that they installed explosives in strategic places in the building while the government says that the explosion was caused by a female suicide bomber. Who is telling the truth between the government and Al-Shabaab? I think the government is lying because it is not possible for the government to fail to prevent such suicide bombers armed with bombs despite all the recent efforts expended to beef up the security. I believe that there are some elements of Al-Shabaab in the transitional federal government and there is need to investigate it.

Peace be upon you. I would like to express my views concerning Al-Shabaab. What these men are doing doesn’t have roots in the religion of Islam because the prophet’s narration tells us that Islam is a religion of mercy and some verses of the holy Koran prohibit the killing of the innocent for whatsoever reason. Islam propagates for peaceful co-existence and support for one another. Islam also prohibits the killing of a non-Muslim who is living with you and not fighting Islam. Al-Shabaab is therefore a devil hiding under the religious name and we have to protect ourselves against the evil actions aimed at wiping the society out of existence. If Al-Shabaab is up to any good work based in the religion of Islam, why don’t their leaders take part in suicide bombings? They do not and this clearly indicates that they are not good people. I would like to caution the Somali youth wherever they are, against their misguided ideologies that propagate suicide bombings. ................. (You will not enter paradise for perpetrating suicide bombings against your Muslim brothers who have done nothing to you.....))(((God says in the holy Koran “If a man kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell, to abide therein (For ever): And the wrath and the curse of Allah are upon him, and a dreadful penalty is prepared for him”))) Read the holy Koran and ponder its meaning. May God Show us the straight path. If we take a general look at this movement – the young Mujahdeen movement in Somalia – we will find that it is an armed movement centralized in a certain region of Somalia. Maybe most of those who form it, or, to put it more accurately, its members that form it, are from those countries that are controlled by this movement, and they have the same method as any revolting movement. Or, to put it more accurately, they are strengthened by the killing and the terrifying acts, and they are using this violent approach to reach their aim, whether this aim is to control Somalia or to spread the Islamic religion among the non-Muslims of the Somali people, or even any other aim they aspire for, until the young Mujahdeen adopted Al-Qaeda’s thoughts recently, as well as the announcement of this movement’s leaders that they owe a debt of gratitude to Al-Qaeda and its leaders, and that they are following the same path, or at least their paths are parallel to each other. This enhances the prevailing thought that this is the will of such movements, to control any country like Somalia, following the Islamic thought approach from their own point of view that they would like to spread. But I would like to say here that killing, destruction and terrorism is nothing but a dirty method to spread an ideology and an approach which they believe is the most elevated and the most right. The Islamic religion calls for tolerance and for every noble and moderate thing, as killing the innocent people who are not guilty of anything is a great crime against humanity. I wish I knew what these movements aspire to.

I am very sorry about what happened because it is something unbelievable that cannot be done by someone who is mentally stable. Therefore, I think they sent a lunatic woman who neither knew what she was doing nor the value life at all. She was sent by people who are enemies to all the Somalis, particularly, those living in Somalia. These are people who do not know the essence of Islam and Jihad (holy war) and do not value both the people and the country. Real Somali men do not resort to wearing veils and suicide bombings. These are nothing but hired individuals who are simple-minded cowards. Please don’t get me wrong if I made a lengthy comment; it is just that I am saddened by the annihilation of the Somali people.
